# Publishing and sharing a clip A clip starts out **private**. Only when you switch it to public can anyone with the URL open it. ## Making a clip public Use the toggle above the preview in the clip list, or the visibility badge on the row itself. The change takes effect immediately and there's no confirmation dialog, because you can undo it just as quickly. Once it's public, a URL of the form `https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/…` starts working. Copy it with the **Copy public URL** button and send it on. **The person opening it doesn't need a Clipnote account.** ## What shows up on a public page Alongside the content, a public page shows the clip's title, format, and the date it was last updated. Your **display name** appears as the author; your email address never does. Paste the URL into a chat or a social post and it expands into a card with an image containing the title. **If you paste the URL of a private clip**, neither the title nor the content appears. All anyone gets is Clipnote's generic image and some generic wording — nothing leaks. ## Being found by search engines and AI Public clips are listed in `sitemap.xml`, which puts them within reach of search engine and AI crawlers. A plain-text version of the content and structured data are embedded in the page too, so a public clip can end up quoted in an AI's answer. The judgment call is the obvious one: don't publish what you don't want seen. **Private clips are excluded from all of this.** ## View counts Public clips show a view count. It's counted in a specific way: - Only **while the clip is public** - **Your own visits don't count** — not the dashboard preview, and not you opening the public URL directly - Making a clip private and public again doesn't reset the running total Private clips show "—" instead. ## Going back to private The same toggle takes it back. The moment you flip it, the public URL stops opening for anyone else. What it can't do is **clear whatever search engines or social platforms have already cached**. Publish on the assumption that publishing can't be fully taken back. ## A note on clips with images Images embedded in clip content are handled **separately** from the clip's own visibility. Even in a private clip, anyone who knows an image's URL can open the image itself.
