# Version history and restoring a version When you rewrite a clip's content, **what was there before is kept in the history automatically**. So when your AI has revised something four times and the second attempt was better, you can get it back. ## Opening the history Choose **Version history** from the clip's menu. The current version sits at the top, with past versions below it, newest first. ## Rewriting the content Use **Create new version** on that same screen. Replacing the content pushes the previous text onto the history as one version. Rewriting content happens only here. There's no way to quietly edit a clip without leaving a trace. ## What you can do with a version | Action | Applies to | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | Preview | Past versions | Shows what it looked like at that point, right there | | Download | Current and past | Saves it as a file | | Restore | Past versions | Overwrites the current content with it | ### The badge that says where an update came from Every version carries a badge showing where the update was made from. - **Dashboard**: updated from Clipnote's own screens - **MCP (API key)**: updated by an AI client connected with an API key - **MCP (OAuth)**: updated by an AI client connected over OAuth When something has changed and you don't remember changing it, this tells you which route it came through. ## What restoring actually does Restore asks for confirmation first. When you go ahead: 1. **The current content is set aside as a new version**, and then 2. the version you picked overwrites the content So **a restore is itself recorded as an update**. If you restore something and immediately wish you hadn't, restore again and you're back. It isn't a one-way door. ## Only the last 10 are kept The history holds **the 10 most recent versions**. When an eleventh update happens, the oldest version drops off, and so on. If a particular version matters long-term, download it at the time or save it as a clip of its own. ## When there's no history A clip whose content has never been rewritten has no history, and the screen says so. Editing the title or flipping visibility isn't a content update, so neither shows up here. ## Read next - [Saving and organizing clips](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/2813a01c-5ba9-4bca-ae90-ef4f76d3cc85) - [The Trash and undoing a deletion](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/58ab1de8-9922-4db6-91a0-abc46bdeb96c)
