# Saving and organizing clips A clip is Clipnote's basic unit. One clip is one page, and each one gets its own URL. ## Creating a clip Press the **+** button at the top right of the clip list to open the dialog. There are only two things to fill in. - **Content**: paste it, or load a file - **Title**: a suggestion is filled in from the content, so correct it only if you need to You don't pick the format (HTML, Markdown, or plain text) yourself. Clipnote works it out from the file extension, or from the content itself when there isn't one. The rules are in [HTML, Markdown, and plain text](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/0074fb67-c2fd-4b27-bdeb-2859d0f367b8). Visibility defaults to **Private**. You can choose Public while creating the clip, but you can switch it either way at any time afterwards. You can also assign the clip to a collection from this same dialog. ## The list and the preview The clip list is split into two panes: an index on the left, and a preview of the selected clip on the right. On a phone you get the list alone, and tapping a row takes you to the detail screen. The left pane filters by: - **Title search** - **Status**: active only, archived only, or all - **Visibility**: public or private - **Format**: HTML, MD, or TXT ### Pinning Clips you open often can be pinned to the top of the list. Pinned clips stay above everything else regardless of when they were last updated. ### Archiving For clips you're finished with but don't want to lose, **Archive** takes them out of the list's default view. It isn't a deletion, so the public URL keeps working. Switch the status filter to archived and you can find them again whenever you like. One thing to know: **archived clips are also out of reach over MCP**. Treat them as invisible to your AI client. ## Fixing the title Choose **Edit title** from the clip's menu. The content isn't touched. ## Rewriting the content You replace the content from the **Version history** screen. Whatever was there before is set aside in the history automatically, so a mistake is never final. See [Version history and restoring a version](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/31f6542c-c7b3-4ce9-9cc8-86ae8f58b648). ## Getting the content back out - **Copy content**: puts the content straight on your clipboard - **Download content**: saves it as a `.html`, `.md`, or `.txt` file Both are in the clip's menu. ## Deleting A deleted clip goes to the Trash and stays there for **30 days**, and you can restore it at any point in that window. The public URL stops working immediately. See [The Trash and undoing a deletion](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/58ab1de8-9922-4db6-91a0-abc46bdeb96c). ## Limits A single clip's content can be up to **1 MB** (measured in UTF-8 bytes). Anything larger won't save. For long documents, split them into a clip per chapter and tie them together with [Publishing clips together in a collection](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/a54f71d7-7dbf-4228-b0f6-75b03ff7a73e). ## Read next - [HTML, Markdown, and plain text](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/0074fb67-c2fd-4b27-bdeb-2859d0f367b8) - [Publishing and sharing a clip](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/a921f4f9-88ce-45fa-9bf9-264f2f19e6a9) - [Version history and restoring a version](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/31f6542c-c7b3-4ce9-9cc8-86ae8f58b648) - [The Trash and undoing a deletion](https://clipnote.paritto.dev/p/58ab1de8-9922-4db6-91a0-abc46bdeb96c)
